“Waters of the eel” in Te Reo Mu0101ori. That’s the meaning of Te Wai u014crea. This is the site where we now stand at the Museum of Transport and Technology. Let’s dive into Auckland’s fascinating history.

The Museum of Transport and Technology or MOTAT was established in 1960. Several groups joined forces. They wanted to preserve trams and railway locomotives. The museum officially opened in 1964.

MOTAT started around a beam engine pump house. This provided Auckland’s first water supply. It’s similar to the Crofton Pumping Station. William Errington designed the pumphouse. It supplied the first pressurized water to Auckland. Adjacent swampland became Western Springs Lake. The Western Springs Water Works opened in 1877. Restoration of the building finished in 2002. The Beam Engine was re-commissioned in 2008.

MOTAT’s mission is significant. The MOTAT Act was passed in 2000. This recognizes the importance of the museum’s work. Today, a strong team of volunteers and staff support the museum.

MOTAT showcases over 300,000 items. These highlight Kiwi innovation. Millions have explored the museum. It offers interactive experiences.

MOTAT has two main sites. They are connected by a vintage tram. The tram ride is free. It makes getting around easy. MOTAT is only 10 minutes from Auckland CBD. You can access it via the North Western Motorway. Take the St Lukes Road off-ramp.

MOTAT’s collection is diverse. It ranges from vintage aircraft to railway cars. Each exhibit tells a story. There’s always something new to discover.

One highlight is New Zealand’s oldest passenger bus. It’s nearly a century old. You can also see Tram 248. It symbolizes Auckland’s public transport. Don’t miss the K 900 locomotive.

The Aviation Hall has the iconic Avro Lancaster. It tells stories of New Zealand’s aviation heroes. Sir Keith Park is among them. You’ll also see early radio broadcasting equipment.

MOTAT has interactive exhibits. Experience Te Ku014dtiu. It highlights flight stories in Aotearoa. See the 1877 Te Whare Mapu. It’s the Pumphouse boiler and Beam Engine. The Heritage Tramway offers scenic rides.

The Heritage Tram Service operates trams from New Zealand and Australia. These include Tram 47 “Big Ben.” Volunteers restored these at MOTAT’s Tram Workshop. The Western Springs Tramway spans 2 km.

The Aviation Hall displays aircraft. These capture New Zealand’s aviation history. You’ll find Solent and Sunderland flying boats. The Lancaster bomber is also there. The hall uses Laminated Veneer Lumber. It also uses natural ventilation strategies.

MOTAT welcomes over 200,000 visitors annually. Families make up most of them. The museum offers educational programs. These link to the New Zealand curriculum. Programs emphasize hands-on learning.

MOTAT engages with the community. It supports events like the Pasifika Festival. A Kaupapa Mu0101ori team promotes te reo and tikanga.

The vintage tram connects the two sites. It provides a unique way to explore. The Aviation Hall is a must-see. It has a fascinating aircraft collection.

MOTAT is a dynamic destination. It’s where nostalgia meets knowledge. Each visit offers something new. Explore the history of transport.
