In 1901, a vision took root. A vision to cultivate not just crops, but knowledge, right here in what would become Villa del Parque. Villa del Parque wasn’t always a bustling neighborhood. It began as a humble patch of Buenos Aires province, dotted with haciendas and a burgeoning agricultural park. The name “Villa del Parque,” meaning “Village of the Park,” is a direct nod to these pastoral beginnings. This area was originally part of the Chacarita de los Colegiales, land once occupied by Jesuit missionaries. Following their departure in 1767, the area became overgrown and passed through several hands, the land subdivided with each transaction.

The true transformation of Villa del Parque began with President Julio Roca’s initiative to enhance agricultural education in 1901. This led to the creation of an agronomy field station and model farm in 1903. The arrival of the railway station in August 1907 spurred further growth, cementing Villa del Parque’s destiny as a vibrant community. On November 8, 1908, Villa del Parque officially became a district of Buenos Aires. It was an exciting time for the new neighborhood, sometimes referred to as “Ciudad Feliz,” or “Happy City.” The close proximity to the Parque Agronómico solidified the name “Villa del Parque.”

Today, Villa del Parque is a primarily middle-class suburb. Cuenca Street bustles with commerce, forming the heart of the neighborhood. Other key landmarks include the Aristóbulo del Valle plaza and the San Martín railway station. During Carnival, the spirit of Villa del Parque comes alive with the “Los Pitucos de Villa del Parque” murga, a traditional street performance group, filling the streets with music and revelry. Did you know that author Julio Cortázar, musicians Andrés Ciro Martínez, Horacio Salgán and Sebastián Piana, tango singer Julio Sosa, and even football legend Diego Maradona all had connections to Villa del Parque? Maradona even met his future wife, Claudia Villafañe, here.
