Commissioned before the world changed, the Reiterdenkmal Kaiser Wilhelm I. stands as a testament to a forgotten era. Lübeck, a city steeped in Hanseatic tradition, ordered this grand equestrian statue in 1912. Sculptor Louis Tuaillon was to immortalize the Kaiser in bronze. The First World War intervened. Bronze was needed for the war effort, not statues. The commission was shelved, seemingly forgotten. Germany transformed. The Kaiserreich crumbled, giving way to the Weimar Republic. Then, in 1921, a surprise arrival. Tuaillon’s masterpiece, cast in bronze, arrived in Lübeck. The city, now a republic, had a Kaiser’s statue on its hands. The timing couldn’t have been worse. Imagine the predicament. No one wanted to celebrate a deposed emperor. Talks of melting down the statue circulated. Luckily, art collector and merchant Siegfried Buchenau stepped in. He purchased the Reiterdenkmal Kaiser Wilhelm I., keeping it safe on his private estate. It wasn’t until 1934 that Lübeck finally claimed its forgotten monument. The Reiterdenkmal Kaiser Wilhelm I. was erected at its current location. It stands as a unique anomaly. Of the 65 equestrian statues of Wilhelm I created, most were destroyed. Lübeck’s statue remains, a poignant reminder of a bygone era. It’s the only one installed after World War I. Notice the naturalistic style of the statue. It reflects the artistic trends of the time, prioritizing a lifelike portrayal over individual expression. The Reiterdenkmal Kaiser Wilhelm I. stands as a silent witness to the tumultuous shifts in German history.
