Oudinot’s legacy stands before you. This is Apelstein 13 a silent witness to the Battle of Wachau. It’s one of 48 markers commemorating the momentous clashes of the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. Dr Theodor Apel a Leipzig writer funded the creation of the first 44 stones between 1861 and 1864. He paid for them himself.

Apelstein 13 is unique. Its pyramidal top signifies the allied forces. The inscription proudly proclaims Oudinot Duke of Reggio and his 12000 men. They fought here on October 16 1813. The stone itself is a replacement. The original sandstone proved too fragile for the harsh Leipzig climate. Many stones were replaced over time some multiple times.

Imagine the scene. The ground trembles under the weight of marching troops. Cannon fire echoes across the fields. Dust and smoke obscure the sun. This very spot Apelstein 13’s location was a vital point in the battle. Oudinot’s troops were crucial to Napoleon’s strategy. Their presence here was significant. They held this line against the Allies.

Sadly even Apelstein 13’s current form isn’t the original. The soft sandstone wore away. Modern replacements often deviate from Apel’s original design. Spelling mistakes sometimes creeped in during copying inscriptions. But it continues to serve its purpose. It recalls this place’s critical role. It stands as a powerful symbol.

This Apelstein is more than just a stone. It’s a link to the past. It speaks of bravery sacrifice and the enduring impact of war. A monument to one man’s army at one point in time. A small detail in the larger scope of history. Yet Apelstein 13 speaks of a key moment in the Battle of Leipzig. It tells the story of a man a battle and a nation’s struggle for freedom.
