Amanda Davis a pioneering African-American woman bought a one-acre tract of land in 1896. This marked the humble beginning of Stop Six Church of Christ. It wasn’t initially called that. The area was then known as Cowanville. Alonzo and Sarah Cowan later bought land there too. They even donated land for the area’s first church. Imagine small farms and homesteads. That’s what Stop Six was in its early days. A largely self-sufficient community.

The name Stop Six came from the Northern Texas Traction Company’s interurban streetcar. Cowanville was the sixth stop on its route between Fort Worth and Dallas. This electric streetcar ran from 1902 to 1934. The name stuck. Stop Six became more than just a train stop.

Over time Stop Six grew. It became a thriving predominantly African-American community. Successful black-owned businesses flourished. Barber shops beauty salons and barbecue stands thrived. They served as the heart of the community. Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School became a central point of pride and achievement.

Dunbar High’s basketball team achieved national recognition. Coach Robert Hughes led the team for 32 years. He became the winningest boys high school basketball coach in the US. This cemented Stop Six’s place in history. It became much more than a neighborhood. It became a symbol of resilience community and success.

Today Stop Six Church of Christ stands as a testament. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this remarkable community. It continues to serve as a center for spiritual growth and community engagement. This church stands on the shoulders of giants. It stands on the shoulders of pioneers like Amanda Davis. Their legacy lives on in Stop Six.
