This very spot held a different name once. The Mareşal Camii you see before you wasn’t always called this. For many years it proudly bore the name of Mareşal Fevzi Çakmak. A name synonymous with the Turkish War of Independence.
This mosque stands as a testament to faith and the dedication of its builders. A group of charitable people painstakingly collected funds from the public. They did this in 1963 to build this magnificent structure. It was originally built in Küçükçekmece a district of Istanbul.
The original Mareşal Fevzi Çakmak Camii was a historical landmark. It was unfortunately damaged beyond repair. A terrible storm in 2017 caused irreparable damage to the building. The minaret collapsed first. Then the entire structure was deemed unsafe.
The decision was made to demolish the old mosque. In its place stands the current Mareşal Camii. However a controversial change occurred. The name was changed. Instead of honouring Mareşal Çakmak the new mosque is named after Hac Osman Dereli.
This decision sparked outrage among many. One surviving member of the original building committee Hamdi Öz voiced his anger. He expressed it as an insult to the memory of a national hero. He felt it was like “dressing our hero in a skirt”. The name of Mareşal Fevzi Çakmak now only appears in the girls’ Quran course within the building.
Mr Öz recounted the history of the original mosque. He and the fire chief Kamil Kutval founded an association. They aimed to build a mosque in honor of Mareşal Çakmak. Three plots of land were donated. The new building was modeled on an old historical mosque. They even went to Ankara to get the imam directly from the Diyanet. Their painstaking efforts were sadly destroyed.
The Mareşal Camii stands as a reminder of history. It’s a reminder of the struggles and the changes. It represents faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Istanbul itself. It’s a place of worship but also a place of reflection. A place where stories of the past resonate in the present.
