He fought for freedom. This is the Martin Miguel de Güemes monument. Right here in Buenos Aires we remember a true national hero.
Güemes was born far from here in Salta in 1785. He was a military leader a gaucho leader. He defended northwestern Argentina against the Spanish. He did this during the Argentine War of Independence. He was a significant figure in the fight for freedom.
Güemes studied at the San Carlos School in Buenos Aires. But at fourteen he joined the army. He was a cadet in the King’s Company. He fought bravely during the British invasions of 1806 and 1807. His military skills were remarkable. He also played a vital role in the Battle of Suipacha in 1810. This was a decisive victory for the independence movement. He was a member of the Army of the North. He fought in Upper Peru as well.
In Salta Güemes organised the gauchos. He used their skills to defend the northern frontier. José de San Martín appointed him commander of the Río Pasaje outpost. Güemes led the Gaucho War. He defended the country from royalist invasions. He did this in Salta and Jujuy.
Güemes held important positions. On May 6 1815 the Cabildo of Salta appointed him Governor. His governorship covered Salta Jujuy and Tarija. His time in office was marked by constant war. He fought against the Spanish invaders relentlessly.
In 1820 San Martín promoted him. He made Güemes General in Chief of the Army of Observation over Peru. Güemes fought numerous royalist invasions. He did this without much support from other provinces.
His death was tragic. Colonel José María “Barbarucho” Valdez invaded Salta. He was commissioned by General Pedro Antonio de Olañeta. He had support from local opposition. On June 7 1821 Güemes was wounded in the back. He died ten days later at just 36 years old.
Güemes’ legacy is one of courage and resistance. In 2006 he was declared a National Hero. Every June 17th we remember his sacrifice. He is a symbol of Argentine independence.
