Rising above us is The Independent. It’s hard to miss this striking skyscraper. The Independent pierces the Austin skyline with its unique, staggered design. It’s a building that sparks curiosity. Some have even nicknamed it the “Jenga Tower” or the “Tetris Tower” because of how it looks.
The Independent isn’t just a visual marvel. It’s a residential tower completed in the spring of 2019. This 58-story giant houses 370 condos, offering luxurious living in the heart of Austin. The building stands tall at 690 feet, making it the second tallest building in Austin, surpassed only by the Sixth and Guadalupe tower.
The Independent is more than just steel and glass. It’s a community. Residents enjoy a range of amenities spread across different floors. The 9th floor is a hub of activity, with a heated pool for a refreshing dip, a club room for socializing, a playground for children, and even a dog park for furry friends. Ascend to the 34th floor and you’ll find a state-of-the-art fitness center, a calming yoga deck, and an outdoor lounge offering breathtaking city views.
Interestingly, the design of the tower’s crown has stirred some controversy. A protest group called “Fix The Crown” even formed in March 2019, voicing their opinions about the aesthetics. This just goes to show how architecture can evoke strong reactions and become a talking point for the city. The Independent’s journey began back in 2014 when it was first proposed. Construction kicked off in 2016, and it finally reached completion three years later. The Independent was born from a public-private partnership between the City of Austin and a private development team. This collaboration transformed a city block under a 2010 Master Development Agreement. Originally known as “Block 24” or “ECC,” this location was home to the Energy Control Center before its relocation.
The Independent contributes to Austin’s values of sustainability. It’s a key participant in Austin Energy’s District Cooling program. This program is designed for a more efficient and eco-friendly way to cool buildings. It reduces the carbon footprint of The Independent. The Independent is also pursuing a LEED Gold Rating. It adds to its commitment to environmental responsibility.
