“Quebrar pedra em São Diogo” Did you hear that phrase before? In the old days it meant working hard. We stand before Morro de São Diogo a hill with a rich history etched in stone. This isn’t just any hill. It’s a piece of Rio’s past. A silent witness to centuries of change.

Morro de São Diogo or São Diogo quarry sits in Santo Cristo. It’s near the Central do Brasil railway station. Three hills are in this area sometimes confused with each other. Morro da Providência Morro do Livramento and Morro de São Diogo.

For centuries granite was quarried here. The stone built much of Rio de Janeiro. This went on until the 1960s. You can still see the scars of this work. Look at Avenidas Francisco Bicalho and Presidente Vargas. The steep slopes bear the marks of this hard labor.

The name? It comes from Alferes Diogo de Pina. He was a soldier. He built a chapel on the hill to honor a saint. He fought French invaders led by Duguay-Trouin. He’s also the namesake of Mangal de São Diogo and Saco do Alferes. A true local hero.

Even in films Morro de São Diogo plays a part. The fifth episode of the 1962 film “Cinco Vezes Favela” is titled “Pedreira de São Diogo”. It was actually filmed at Pedreira da Providência. Filmmakers sometimes take creative liberties.

This seemingly small hill holds a big story. It whispers tales of hard work colonial history and even cinematic drama. It reminds us that even the humblest places have stories to tell. This is Morro de São Diogo. A significant piece of Rio’s past.
