“A bridge to the future, built on the foundations of the past.” That’s how I often think of the Pont de la Première Armée Française. This bridge, right here, connecting Juvisy-sur-Orge and Draveil across the Seine, tells a story not just of modern engineering, but also of resilience and remembrance. The Pont de la Première Armée Française, as it stands today, is a sleek structure of prestressed concrete. It was completed in March 1968 and officially inaugurated on April 25, 1970. Its deck, supported by two double concrete piers, carries the four lanes of the D931 road and two sidewalks. But the story of crossing the Seine at this point goes back much further. Long before the concrete and steel, there was a simpler way to get across: a ferry. Imagine the daily routine of people relying on this ferry, the slow rhythm of crossing the river marking the passage of time. Then, in the 1890s, progress arrived in the form of a metal truss bridge. This first bridge, with its three 54-meter spans and intricate Saint Andrew’s crosses, was a marvel of its time. Sadly, this bridge was not destined to last. In 1940, the French army deliberately disabled it to hinder the German advance. The Germans repaired it during the Occupation, only for it to be partially destroyed again in a 1944 bombing raid by the Royal Air Force. A temporary reconstruction followed in 1946, using salvaged parts of the old bridge, a testament to the resourcefulness of the time. This makeshift solution served until the current Pont de la Première Armée Française was built, a symbol of a new era. The name itself, “Bridge of the First French Army,” is a tribute to the resilience and sacrifice of the French military. As you cross this bridge today, take a moment to consider its history. It’s not just a way to get from one side of the Seine to the other. It’s a link between the past and the present, a reminder of the challenges overcome and the progress made. The Pont de la Première Armée Française stands as a symbol of hope and connection, carrying the flow of life between two communities.
