Ten judges fourteen legal officers and sixty more. That’s the team at the Amtsgericht Delmenhorst. A bustling hub of justice in the heart of Delmenhorst. This impressive building stands tall a testament to the long history of legal proceedings in this city.
The Amtsgericht Delmenhorst has deep roots. Its history stretches back centuries. Delmenhorst was once the seat of the Counts of Oldenburg-Delmenhorst. These counts established a court here. Although they granted Delmenhorst Bremen city rights in 1371 a lower court wasn’t documented until 1577. The counts retained jurisdiction initially. This lower court was transferred to the city in 1699. The Amtsgericht traces its origins to the Count’s bailiff. This was later replaced by the Justice Chancellery. In 1653 the Chancellery became the Delmenhorst Regional Court.
French annexation changed everything. Existing Oldenburg courts were dissolved. In 1811 the Hanseatic Department’s court system was implemented. This created the Delmenhorst Peace Court. This reported to the Oldenburg Tribunal of First Instance. The Napoleonic era ended. The Grand Duchy of Oldenburg created the Delmenhorst Office in 1814. This served as both an administrative district and a court of first instance. It replaced the Peace Court. Above it was the newly established Delmenhorst Regional Court.
The Court Organization Act of 1857 for the Duchy of Oldenburg restructured the system. Regional courts were abolished and three higher courts were formed. Delmenhorst remained a court of first instance. This was still called the Delmenhorst Office. However jurisdiction and administration were separated. The Oldenburg Higher Court became the superior instance. The introduction of the Reich Judiciary Acts in 1879 reorganized the courts again. The Amtsgericht Delmenhorst was established then.
The current courthouse dates to around 1900. Initially designed for three judges it proved too small. Despite a loft conversion. Expansion plans date back to the 1950s but remain unrealized. Extra space is now used in the Helmut-Lange-Haus on Cramerstraße 183.
The Amtsgericht Delmenhorst’s jurisdiction encompasses the city of Delmenhorst and the community of Ganderkesee. Approximately 90 lawyers four legal assistants and twenty-four notaries are licensed here. Its area covers around 110000 citizens. It is a special court for insolvencies covering Delmenhorst and Wildeshausen. The Amtsgericht Delmenhorst is subordinate to the Oldenburg Regional Court and the Oldenburg Higher Regional Court.
