Seven people gathered one November afternoon in 1881. This small gathering marked the beginning of something significant for the Alliance Holiness Church.

Let’s explore the story behind this church and its roots.

Rev Albert Benjamin Simpson had just resigned from his prestigious New York City pastorate. He felt a deep concern for those alienated from formal churches. He wanted to reach out to the unchurched masses who still sought the Lord.

From this humble start the Gospel Tabernacle emerged. It became a welcoming church for people of all backgrounds. Simpson’s evangelistic campaigns drew people from various ethnicities and social classes to Christ. The Gospel Tabernacle actively reached out to the city’s marginalized.

Simpson and his followers had a strong desire to spread Jesus’ message to distant lands. They wanted to reach places where Christ’s name was not yet known. To prepare people for overseas ministry Simpson founded the Missionary Training Institute. It was the first North American Bible college.

By the late 1800s the missions society had sent 180 workers overseas. Two-thirds of them were women. They opened 12 new foreign fields to spread the Gospel.

After Simpson’s death Dr Paul Rader became the leader. He was a dynamic evangelist and pastor. The mission society became The Christian and Missionary Alliance or The Alliance.

Despite challenges like the Great Depression and World War II The Alliance continued expanding. They ventured into new overseas mission fields. Robert A Jaffray an Alliance missionary to Asia showed great courage during this time.

When the Great Depression threatened to stop overseas work Jaffray declared they should not hesitate. He said they must follow the Lord Jesus’ command. He encouraged them to look at the encouraging miracles happening. Jaffray later died in a Japanese prison camp near the end of World War II.

After World War II The Alliance grew locally and globally. In 1974 it officially became a denomination. A major organizational restructuring followed. Dr A W Tozer and Dr Louis L King greatly influenced The Alliance during this time.

Dr King a former missionary to India led efforts to develop self-supporting churches overseas. These churches would be self-propagating and self-governing. Tozer a respected pastor in Chicago for 30 years became editor of the Alliance Weekly magazine in 1950. It is now called Alliance Life.

Since the mid-1970s the Christian and Missionary Alliance in the US and Canada has become more multicultural. U.S. Alliance churches have embraced immigrants. They discipled and equipped them. Many immigrants returned home with a passion for sharing their faith. The U.S. Alliance has become one of the most diverse evangelical churches in America.

Today the Alliance Holiness Church plants churches. It builds and manages schools, clinics and hospitals. It also supports community centers and retirement homes. They extend care to families affected by disease, poverty, political turmoil and natural disasters. They partner with other organizations to provide practical support in Jesus’ name.

Local Alliance churches support the worldwide mission. They offer prayers and give generously to the Great Commission Fund. The Alliance’s journey began with a small group and grew into a global movement. Their commitment to spreading the Gospel remains strong.
