In 1897, a beacon of faith arose amidst the bustling streets of Fulham. St Alban’s Fulham, a district church, emerged within the parish of Fulham All Saints. Initially a humble corrugated iron mission, St Alban the Martyr, it quickly became a vital community hub. This “tin shack,” as some called it, solidified over a century of Christian mission, service, and prayer. Today, St Alban’s Fulham stands proudly on Margravine Road, serving a community of over 10,000 people. The church’s journey hasn’t been without its trials. In the early 2000s, it faced a period of closure. However, in 2009, a new chapter began. The Bishop of Kensington, supported by Simon Downham and Nicky Gumbel, invited Matt and Kate Hogg to revitalize St Alban’s. A year later, the church reopened, a joint venture by St. Paul’s Hammersmith and Holy Trinity Brompton. St Alban’s Fulham is more than just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub, passionate about gathering in God’s presence, following Jesus, and embracing the Holy Spirit. The church’s red brick walls, adorned with stone dressings and a slate roof, showcase the Perpendicular style. Designed by Aston Webb and Ingres Ball, the architecture is noted for its originality, despite being unfinished. Inside, brick polychromy in red and yellow creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. The wide arcades, octagonal piers, and a unique king post roof add to the church’s charm. St Alban’s continues its mission of community outreach. A youth project engages local teenagers, Alpha Courses welcome newcomers, and “Tea for Older People and Friends” combats isolation. “The Ark,” a toddlers’ group, provides a space for families to connect. From humble beginnings as a tin shack to a thriving center of faith and community, St Alban’s Fulham continues to write its story.
