Five hundred thousand crowns. That’s what it cost to build Fortunfortet. Imagine the scale of such an undertaking in 1891. This imposing structure before you stands as a testament to a bygone era of coastal defenses. Fortunfortet is one of Copenhagen’s smaller forts. It’s a triangular fort part of Copenhagen’s Landbefæstning. Captain Edvard Rambusch oversaw its construction. Oberstløjtnant E J Sommerfeldt designed it.

Fortunfortet’s strategic location near Dyrehaven was crucial. It was meant to defend the western part of Eremitagesletten. It would also protect parts of Lundtoftesletten. The fort’s main entrance faces south. Its pointed end faces north. This configuration is standard for many Copenhagen forts. It minimized the number of sides needing defense. Fortunfortet was armed with eight 75mm cannons. Four were quick-firing and concealed. Four more 75mm cannons offered extra protection. There were also twelve recoil rifles.

Despite its formidable appearance Fortunfortet never saw real action. During World War I it housed 110 men from the Security Force. It was never used operationally. As part of the 1909 defense agreement most of Copenhagen’s fortifications including Fortunfortet were decommissioned in 1920.

After its decommissioning Fortunfortet changed hands many times. It served various purposes. It was a mushroom farm. It stored motorcycle parts. It even held Tivoli’s gunpowder. This last use resulted in a tragic accident. In 1945 four young men broke in seeking fireworks. They accidentally ignited the gunpowder. All four died. This incident highlights the unpredictable fate of even the most well-fortified structures.

Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality acquired Fortunfortet around 1955. In 1992 it was protected as a historical monument. Sadly it has fallen into disrepair. Despite its dilapidated condition Fortunfortet remains a powerful symbol of Copenhagen’s past. It is a silent sentinel. It has witnessed centuries of change. It stands as a reminder of the city’s history. It is a place steeped in stories both glorious and tragic. Take a moment to appreciate its quiet strength. Remember its unique history.
