“South Gate Barn” they called it. That’s what the locals whispered about the Yunjian Granary. This wasn’t just any old barn. This was a place steeped in history. Built in 1953 at the meeting point of the Tongbo River and Renmin Canal it served as a vital rice mill and grain storehouse for decades.

The Yunjian Granary stood proudly. Its sixty-plus buildings formed a sprawling complex. Each one whispered tales of a bygone era. Gray bricks and red tiles stood testament to its age. Original posts and beams remain. Peeling paint and old-fashioned lamps add character. The bulbs may be energy-saving now but the charm remains untouched.

Imagine the scene. Farmers arriving by boat. Rice being sucked directly into channels. Then transported to transfer rooms. Finally stored in the various types of warehouses. There were the bungalow-type warehouses. Foreign aid projects from after 1949. They are a rare sight. Then the room-type warehouses now artist studios. The plain warehouses transformed into cozy lodging.

And then there are the silos. Eight of them stand tall. Each twenty-four meters high and five and a half meters in diameter. They once held ingredients for the old Songjiang Flour Factory. Now their exteriors are adorned with vibrant graffiti. Four astronauts walk through golden-yellow rice paddies. They gaze up at the stars. A scene inspired by Songjiang rice’s journey into space.

The Yunjian Granary isn’t just about the past. It’s a thriving hub today. Art galleries and opera stages buzz with activity. Bookstores and an open-air cinema offer moments of quiet contemplation. Bazaars and art studios invite exploration. Waterfront terraces offer stunning views.

During the renovation a stone inscription was unearthed. It documents the Puzhao Temple reconstruction in the Qing Dynasty. The stone tablet is now a district-level cultural heritage site.

The Yunjian Granary is more than just a landmark. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Songjiang. It’s a place where history and modernity blend seamlessly. It’s a place where you can feel the pulse of Shanghai’s creative heart. A place where you can step back in time and yet feel completely at home.
