Tampines Primary School first opened its doors in 1985. It started at Yumin Primary School. The next year Tampines Primary School moved to its current home on Tampines Street 12.
In 1988, Mr. Phua Bah Lee officially opened Tampines Primary School. He was a former Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Defence. He also served as a Member of Parliament for Tampines.
Tampines Primary School embraces the idea that every student can learn and excel. The school strives to meet the changing needs of education.
The school crest evolved in 1999. It changed to a tapered ‘T’. This projected a forward-looking vision. It also showed the school’s strong support for using ICT in teaching. By 2000, Tampines Primary School had 280 computers. This greatly improved teaching and learning. It was a big jump from the 20 computers in 1991.
Starting in 2004, Tampines Primary School adopted a multi-faceted approach. It aimed to push the boundaries of teaching and learning. The school fostered a belief that every staff member is an innovative leader. Tampines Primary School leveraged the school itself as a learning tool. This created learning experiences beyond the classroom. Action research became a key part of teaching. PoETEL became the guiding framework. It ensured more effective lessons and engaged students fully.
Extensive renovations began in 2007. The Programme for Rebuilding & Improving Existing Schools enhanced the facilities. For a period, all levels experienced single-session schooling every Monday. Single sessions freed up facilities. This allowed for more after-school enrichment programs. In 2008, Tampines Primary School officially implemented single sessions. Classes started at 8:00 am. December 2009 marked the completion of the PRIME upgrades. Students returned to a new building. It featured better facilities for learning.
Tampines Primary School holds the distinction of being Singapore’s first community school. It actively uses community resources to enrich student learning. This approach helps students become concerned citizens. The partnership fosters a caring culture among the Tampines West communities.
Tampines Primary School achieved significant milestones. In 2010 and 2014, it received the School Distinction Award. These achievements reflect a shared vision. They also highlight the strong collaboration between the school and its partners.
Over the years, Tampines Primary School has been led by dedicated principals. Mr. Goh Liang Chuan served from 1986 to 1997. Mrs. Ng Ai Lin followed from 1998 to 2000. Mr. Law Chor Hoo led from 2001 to 2003. Mrs. Wong Bin Eng served from 2004 to 2010. Ms. Veronica Tay was principal from 2011 to 2018. Mrs. Lay See Neufeld took over in 2019.
Tampines Primary School celebrated its 10th anniversary in 1996. It marked its 20th anniversary in 2006. The school celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2011. In 2016, it commemorated its 30th anniversary.
The school’s crest features stylized letters ‘T’ and ‘P’. They stand for ‘Tampines Primary School’. The crest symbolizes a child graduating with an education geared toward the future. The colors white, blue, and red represent the school’s identity. White depicts purity of mind. Blue signifies excellence. Red represents the vibrancy of the school’s programs. Two lines represent the steps toward achieving educational outcomes. The round shape represents a holistic education.
The school song embodies the spirit of Tampines Primary School. It speaks of loyalty, unity, and the pursuit of truth. The song honors teachers. It reinforces the importance of duty and obedience.
