Just 1 mile long, the Sauganash Trail winds its way through the heart of Chicago’s northwest side. It’s a hidden gem that many locals may not even know exists. Imagine a paved path that stretches from Bryn Mawr to Devon, lined with lush green lawns and towering trees. Here, the hurried pace of the city melts away, replaced by a peaceful ambiance, perfect for a leisurely stroll, a brisk jog, or a leisurely bike ride.

The Sauganash Trail, officially known as Sauganash Trail Park, is a relatively recent addition to the city’s landscape. In the mid-2000s, the Chicago Department of Transportation, funded by a generous federal and state grant, transformed an old railroad corridor into a multi-use recreational trail. It was a labor of love, requiring not only the construction of two bridges over Peterson and Rogers Park avenues but also the demolition of the aging original bridges.

Once the path was complete, the Chicago Park District, in 2009, entered into a lease agreement with the city of Chicago to manage and maintain this public green space. This historic move truly cemented this path as a community treasure. It even got its own name, honoring the area it cuts through, the Sauganash neighborhood.

The Sauganash name comes from Billy Caldwell, a prominent figure in Chicago’s early history. He was known as “Sauganash,” an Indian word meaning “English-speaking” or “Englishman.” This trail, a testament to both nature’s beauty and the community’s dedication to recreation, is truly a hidden gem for those seeking a peaceful and refreshing escape.
