Gazing across the Rådhuspladsen, one’s eyes are drawn to the magnificent H.C. Andersen Slottet. This striking building, also known as Tivolislottet, stands proudly opposite Copenhagen’s City Hall, a silent sentinel watching over the bustling city. H.C. Andersen Slottet, acquired by Tivoli Gardens in 1978, is more than just a beautiful façade. It’s a treasure trove of history, a place where art, industry, and the spirit of Hans Christian Andersen intertwine. The Tivoli Gardens chose this name to connect the beloved storyteller with the magic of their amusement park. The statue of Andersen, situated across the boulevard named after him, gazes at the building, a poetic connection between the man and the place. Designed by the Danish architect Vilhelm Klein, H.C. Andersen Slottet showcases the distinctive Rosenborg style, a form of Dutch Renaissance architecture popular during the era of Historicism. Constructed between 1892 and 1893, the building was initially intended as an art industry museum. This was thanks to the initiative of prominent figures like Carl Jacobsen, the owner of the Carlsberg brewery. H.C. Andersen Slottet holds a significant place in Copenhagen’s “educational route,” a series of monumental public buildings erected around the city center after the demolition of the city walls. Among these grand structures are the Polyteknisk Læreanstalt (now the Technical University of Denmark), the Astronomical Observatory, and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. Within the walls of H.C. Andersen Slottet, the first collection of the Museum of Industrial Art was established. The museum’s first director, Pietro Krohn, acquired a vast collection of Art Nouveau objects at the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris. While some pieces were later sold, the museum still retains a significant collection of Danish arts and crafts from notable artists like Thorvald Bindesbøll and J.F. Willumsen. The building itself is a four-winged structure, featuring a covered inner courtyard, or vestibule, illuminated by skylights. Its red brick walls are adorned with decorative sandstone details, topped by a slate roof. Inside, much of the original layout and decoration remain, a testament to the high-quality materials used in its construction. The vestibule, with its arched arcades and inscribed stones bearing uplifting sentences, stands as a testament to the building’s rich history. After the Museum of Industrial Art moved to new premises in 1926, H.C. Andersen Slottet served various purposes. It housed the headquarters of De Forenede Bryggerier, a gymnastics institute, an officers’ association, and even the Royal Garrison Library. It was also home to Louis Tussaud’s Wax Museum and the controversial “Bodies” exhibition. Today, H.C. Andersen Slottet serves Tivoli Gardens as office space and also houses meeting and banquet rooms. One wing even serves as the barracks for the Tivoli Boys Guard. The H.C. Andersen Slottet stands as a testament to Copenhagen’s rich history. It’s a place where the echoes of Andersen’s fairy tales mingle with the vibrant pulse of Tivoli Gardens, creating an experience that’s both magical and unforgettable.
