Deep beneath the Sancerre hillside, the roots of ancient vines intertwine. These vines give life to Domaine La Moussière. La Moussière isn’t just a vineyard. It is a story woven into the fabric of Sancerre itself. La Moussière stands as a testament to the Mellot family’s enduring legacy. Their connection to this land stretches back to the 16th century. Records from 1513 mention the Mellot family, already deeply rooted in the rhythms of viticulture. They cultivated their vines, crafting wines of exceptional quality. Their dedication continued even through tumultuous times. During the siege of Sancerre, the Mellots persisted in their patient labor. Their wines continued to gain recognition. This culminated in César Mellot’s appointment as Wine Advisor to Louis XIV in 1698. In the 19th century, Alphonse Mellot established a tavern in Sancerre. Here, locals and travelers alike could savor the unique character of Sancerre wines. This marked the beginning of a flourishing trade. This trade extended beyond Sancerre’s borders in 1881. Alphonse Mellot obtained a license to ship his wines throughout France and the world. The Mellot family, now led by the 18th and 19th generation named Alphonse, continue to nurture this legacy. Domaine La Moussière is the jewel in the crown of their vineyards. This single, expansive vineyard of over thirty hectares occupies a privileged position. Its south-western location on the Sancerre hill provides ideal exposure. Chalky soil and a specific sub-soil create the perfect terroir for Sauvignon Blanc grapes. These small, tightly packed grapes yield a white wine of remarkable finesse, bouquet, and fruitiness. La Moussière wines stand in a category of their own amongst Sancerre wines. Their exceptional quality has earned them official recognition. La Moussière embodies the heart and soul of Sancerre, where history, terroir, and family tradition converge.
