Did you know that this unassuming building once hosted the heart of German democracy? Welcome to the ehem Wasserwerk Bonn. This is more than just an old waterworks. It’s a place where history unfolded.

Built in the late 19th century the ehem Wasserwerk served Bonn’s vital water needs. It drew water from the Rhine River. The original structure consisted of a machine hall a boiler house and a chimney. A machinist’s house was also part of the complex. The city of Bonn took ownership in 1900. Significant expansions followed including a new pump house and additional wells.

But the story doesn’t end with water. After World War II Bonn became the temporary capital of West Germany. The ehem Wasserwerk found itself near the new government buildings. By the 1950s Bonn’s water supply came from the Wahnbachtalsperre reservoir. The Wasserwerk was no longer essential for the city’s water supply. It was decommissioned in 1958.

However the ehem Wasserwerk’s history was far from over. When the Bundestag’s main chamber was undergoing renovations the pump house became an unexpected solution. It was transformed into a temporary parliamentary chamber. Imagine the bustle of activity the hurried renovations and the sheer importance of this repurposed space. Between 1986 and 1993 the ehem Wasserwerk echoed with momentous decisions. This includes discussions about German reunification and the selection of Berlin as the new capital.

The ehem Wasserwerk served as a space for political discussions. It was a place where history was literally made. The cramped quarters of the former pump house reportedly led to unusually peaceful sessions.

After reunification and the move of the Bundestag to Berlin the ehem Wasserwerk became part of the World Conference Center Bonn. It hosted international events including a conference with the Dalai Lama. Later it became a part of the UN campus.

Today the ehem Wasserwerk stands as a testament to its versatile past. A reminder of its roles in supplying water housing the heart of German politics and hosting international dialogue. Its neo-Gothic style adds a unique charm. The building is a protected monument and part of the ‘Path of Democracy’ tour.
