Tucked away in Montreuil, École Primaire Romain Rolland whispers tales of generations past. This isn’t just any school. It’s a living testament to the community’s commitment to education, a value as deeply rooted as the building’s foundations. École Primaire Romain Rolland first opened its doors in 1931. It replaced an older school, built in 1873, which had seen several expansions. The current structure stands as a beautiful example of 1930s school architecture. The symmetrical facades retain a hint of the Jules Ferry style, softened by the warm tones of the brick. Notice the large windows. They’re not just aesthetic features. They’re a nod to the hygienist movement of the time, emphasizing the importance of light and fresh air for students. Look closely at the main entrance on Rue Romain Rolland. Two mosaic panels adorn the walls, adding a splash of color and history. One features a quote from Danton: “After bread, education is the first need of the people.” The other showcases Montreuil’s coat of arms, flanked by two young girls. École Primaire Romain Rolland currently serves 235 students and operates within the Réseau d’éducation prioritaire (REP) framework. The school day runs from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and then from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. A cafeteria provides meals for the students. Interestingly, remnants of the original 1873 school can still be found in the courtyard. A long building, constructed of stone and brick, divides the playground, offering a tangible link to the past. École Primaire Romain Rolland is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant hub of learning, where the echoes of history mingle with the laughter of children, reminding us of the enduring power of education.
