Have you ever dreamt of escaping a prison by swimming? The Ile Tiboulen de Maire whispers tales of daring escapes. It sits just off the coast near Marseille a small uninhabited island.

The Ile Tiboulen de Maire is more than just a speck of land in the Mediterranean. It is a significant landmark in the Riou archipelago south of Marseille. Around 100 meters long and 49 meters high it boasts a distinctive shape. Locals call it the Turtle Island because of its unique form. A flashing white light atop the island guides sailors through the treacherous waters. Its name Tiboulen derives from the Provençal evolution of the Latin antipolitanus. This in turn comes from the Greek antipolis meaning opposite the city. The name reflects the island’s position across from Marseille.

The most famous story of the Ile Tiboulen de Maire involves Edmond Dantes. He is the protagonist in Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo. In the novel Edmond swims to the Ile Tiboulen after escaping Chateau d’If. This escape is a dramatic event in the story. The distance between the Chateau d’If and the island is however debated. Dumas’ collaborator Auguste Maquet used the Cassini map for geographical details. This map however contained inaccuracies about the Marseille harbor. According to the Cassini map the distance is only around 3 kilometers. A challenging swim for a man weakened by years of imprisonment but significantly shorter than the approximately 7 kilometers stated in the novel.

In modern times the Ile Tiboulen de Maire remains a beacon. It has even inspired open water swimming challenges. One such event is the Le Defi Edmond Dantes a 7.7 km night swim between the Chateau d’If and the island. In 2022 Jacques Tuset completed this arduous swim in 2 hours 27 minutes. He did this challenging swim at the age of 58. His feat added another layer to the island’s legend of daring feats and escapes.

The Ile Tiboulen de Maire. More than just an island a symbol of hope adventure and the enduring power of a good story.
