Perhaps George Orwell envisioned a pub just like The Moon Under Water. He wrote about his ideal fictional pub named “The Moon Under Water” in the London Evening Standard.

The Moon Under Water, a West End Wetherspoon pub, sits right here in the heart of Leicester Square. It opened its doors in June 1992. Before that, this spot was a steak bar. The name, The Moon Under Water, actually comes from another pub, the now Montague Pyke around the corner on Charing Cross Road.

This particular Moon Under Water is known for its narrow frontage. There’s a small area outside where you can drink and smoke, right on Leicester Square. Inside, you will find a long, bustling bar area. A family area sits at the rear. You will also find a very cosmopolitan and touristy crowd here.

The Moon Under Water boasts eight handpumps. They often have some interesting guest beers available. Keep in mind that prices here might be a bit higher than at other Wetherspoon pubs. This is because it is a tourist area. In 2022, Chairman Tim Martin mentioned that the rent and rates for this location approached one million pounds per year.

The Moon Under Water offers a good range of ales. You will find craft beers and freshly ground Lavazza coffee too. It is the perfect place for a family lunch. It is also great for a pint after work. But remember, you cannot buy alcoholic drinks before 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday. On Sundays, the sale of alcohol starts at noon.

Many people enjoy the lively atmosphere. They appreciate the good real ales and food. Some visitors feel the prices are justified due to the location in Leicester Square. Others have had mixed experiences with the food.

Regardless, The Moon Under Water remains a popular spot. It offers a traditional pub experience in a prime location. It’s a place to relax and enjoy a drink in the heart of the West End. So grab a pint and soak in the atmosphere of The Moon Under Water.
