“Did you hear about the school that moved because of a university?” Fukuoka City Hakozaki Junior High School has a history as unique as its school song. Fukuoka City Hakozaki Junior High School opened in April 1947. This was a time of significant educational reform in Japan, the shift to the six-three school system. The school quickly established its identity. In 1948, the school song and flag were created. The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) was also formed that year. Over the years, Fukuoka City Hakozaki Junior High School saw numerous developments. A playground was completed in 1950. A steel rotary was finished in 1951. The alumni association was established in 1952. A library was built in 1957, and a gymnasium in 1965. Reflecting changing social norms, cycling to school was banned in 1970. A pool was completed in 1972, school lunches began in 1973, and the school grounds were opened at night in 1974. A new gymnasium was built in 1976. Due to unusual flooding, well-digging works were carried out in 1978. A front garden and pond were completed in 1979, and a martial arts ground in 1983. A jogging road was added in 1988. The students even had the opportunity to observe the Yoktopia Expo in 1989. They participated in the Tobiuo National Sports Festival in 1990. A nature classroom opened in 1993. In 2000, Fukuoka City Hakozaki Seisho Junior High School split off. Between 2002 and 2004, the school underwent large-scale renovations. In 2009, earthquake-resistant construction was carried out on the gymnasium. This was followed by the completion of a technology science room and earthquake-resistant work on the school building in 2010. Most remarkably, in 2016, Fukuoka City announced plans to relocate Fukuoka City Hakozaki Junior High School. This relocation was part of a larger plan to utilize land on the Kyushu University Hakozaki Campus. Fukuoka City Hakozaki Junior High School boasts a unique tradition. The school song is sung with a distinctive style, involving foot-stamping and loud singing. In 2016, a new choral school song was created, now performed alongside the traditional, powerful school song. The school focuses on its three major events: the Sports Day, the Class Match, and the Chorus Contest. Located near Kyushu University’s Hakozaki Campus, the school is also close to the Hakozaki Station. This proximity to both educational institutions and public transport is a defining feature of Fukuoka City Hakozaki Junior High School’s location.
