Doesn’t the name Uphusen sound like it holds secrets from centuries past? This district of Achim has a story. It sits in the Landkreis Verden in Lower Saxony. Uphusen lies southeast of Bremen. Its history stretches back to the Bronze Age. Archaeological finds suggest settlement around 3000 years ago.

The first documented mention of Uphusen occurred in 1339. Another source says 1230. This mention related to a Jakobi chapel that existed then. The name Uphusen might come from a family named “Ubbo”. However, solid sources to confirm this are absent.

Until the 20th century, Uphusen belonged to the Arbergen parish. Bollen, Mahndorf, and Hemelingen were also part of this parish. Uphusen developed along the important road from Verden to Bremen.

In 1871, locals built the Uphusen windmill. The Uphusen Volunteer Fire Brigade formed in 1937. On July 1, 1972, Uphusen became part of Achim. Archaeological excavations occurred during the construction of the NEL pipeline. Workers unearthed a gold finger ring with a blue pearl dating from the 4th to 7th centuries.

Today, Uphusen has some interesting sights. There is a residential and commercial building at Im Dorfe 3 dating back to 1802. Of course, there is also the Uphusen windmill.

Uphusen also boasts active clubs. The Schützenverein Uphusen was founded in 1920. Turnerbund Uphusen is the district’s only sports club. Its soccer team currently plays in the Oberliga Niedersachsen. The floorball team is also well-known. They play as TB Uphusen Vikings. In 2005, their mixed team became German champions.

Uphusen sits close to the A1 motorway. The Uphusen/HB-Mahndorf exit is on the western edge of the village. East of Uphusen is the Achim Sandtrockenrasen nature reserve. It covers 56 hectares.

So, as you stand here in Uphusen, imagine the families. Think of the trade route and the ring. This village saw centuries of change. It grew from a small settlement to a district of Achim. Uphusen offers a glimpse into local history. It connects us to the past.
