Thousands of years ago people settled on Croham Hurst. This hilltop held a special significance. It became a place of life and death.

Croham Hurst is more than just a hill. It’s a Site of Special Scientific Interest a place of immense historical and ecological importance. For millennia it has witnessed human activity. Evidence shows settlements dating back to the Mesolithic period 5000-3000 BC. Neolithic flint tools reveal continued habitation through the Stone Age. A Bronze Age round barrow a Scheduled Ancient Monument still stands as a silent testament to these early inhabitants. A plaque marks its location.

Imagine the lives of these early settlers. They built low turf-walled huts. They used flint tools. They buried their dead in ceremonial mounds atop this very hill. The hill itself is fascinating. Thanet Sands form much of the Hurst. A pebble bed caps the hill. This is a result of erosion. A natural cement binds the Blackheath pebble beds preventing further erosion. This created the unique landscape we see today. The summit remains largely treeless. Rounded pebbles are visible. They are a reminder of shallow seas from the Eocene epoch around 50 million years ago. The sparse vegetation includes wavy hair-grass heather and bilberry.

The story of Croham Hurst isn’t just ancient history. In the medieval period it was one of four manors in Sanderstead parish. Sir Olliphe Leigh sold it to Archbishop John Whitgift. It became part of his Whitgift Foundation. This charity continues to operate today. In the late nineteenth century it became popular. People enjoyed visiting. They didn’t always realize it was private property. A campaign saved Croham Hurst from development. Croydon Corporation purchased it in 1901. It became part of the London Borough of Croydon in 1965.

Unfortunately a fire in 2018 damaged the area. Despite its rich history and ecological importance Croham Hurst faces challenges. Today we can still walk the same paths. We can still experience the wonder of this place. The past echoes here in the landscape. The quiet whispers of ancient people and the enduring strength of nature. Let’s appreciate Croham Hurst for its beauty and for its story. It stands as a reminder of the long and complex relationship between humans and the environment.
