“Where ambitions are nurtured” is more than a motto here at the University of Liechtenstein. It’s a lived reality. Right now, we are standing in front of this leading university in the heart of Vaduz.

The University of Liechtenstein’s story began in 1961. Back then, it was the Abendtechnikum. It mainly taught mechanical and civil engineers. Over time, it evolved into the Liechtenstein School of Engineering.

In 1998, a significant milestone occurred. The institution gained formal recognition as the Liechtenstein University of Applied Sciences. It was renamed Hochschule Liechtenstein in 2005. Then in 2008, it achieved full university status. This allowed the university to offer doctoral programs. These joined its bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The Bologna Process guided these academic expansions.

The University of Liechtenstein continued to evolve. In November 2010, the Liechtenstein Parliament passed a law. This law formally established the University of Liechtenstein. It was ratified on February 1, 2011.

Many people have shaped the university. Klaus Näscher co-founded the institution. Jürgen Brücker succeeded him as president in October 2016. Brücker came from the University of St. Gallen. Ulrike Baumöl became rector in October 2019. She was formerly at the University of Hagen. In April 2021, Markus Jäger took over as rector.

The University of Liechtenstein focuses on architecture and business economics. These include entrepreneurship, finance, information systems, and business law. Notably, the Entrepreneurship master’s program ranked second in an international ranking in 2009. The Architecture program achieved first place in 2008. This was in a ranking by DETAIL magazine.

This internationality enriches the campus environment. It prepares students for global careers. About a quarter of students stay in Liechtenstein after graduating. Another quarter remains in the Rhine Valley.

The University of Liechtenstein actively shapes its campus. Students remodeled a seminar room and built a model-making workshop. The solar tree landmark generates half the university’s electricity.
