Is there a more uplifting sound than a choir singing in perfect harmony? Here at Tooting Methodist Church, that sound has resonated for decades. The Tooting Methodist Church we see today, with its distinct brick and concrete design, was built in 1968 and designed by the Covell Matthews Partnership. But this church’s story actually begins much earlier. Step back in time with me to 1909. It was then that a man named Joseph Rank, a flour miller and a devout Methodist, was struck by a scene during his walk. On a sunny afternoon, Joseph Rank was walking from his home in Church Lane towards Emmanuel Church when he saw groups of men congregating around street preachers. These individuals were drawn to the allure of “Socialism” and “non-Christian” ideologies. This deeply troubled Joseph Rank. He envisioned a place where people, especially the working class, could find solace and purpose on Sundays. This vision led him to rally support from his Methodist community and influential figures in Tooting. Their combined efforts resulted in the construction of The Central Hall. Tooting Methodist Church’s legacy extends beyond its history. This church is a vibrant hub for the community. With a dedicated choir that rehearses twice a week, fellowship groups, and bible studies, Tooting Methodist Church offers a place for people to connect and grow their faith.
