Founded in 1872 Masjid Jamek Hashim Yahya stands proudly in Kampung Dodol Penang. Its history stretches back further though. Tamil Muslims and Acehnese had already settled nearby by the late 18th century. The land itself holds a special significance. It’s known as Dato Keramat because a Muslim ascetic is buried in the adjacent Perak Road Malay Cemetery. Hashim Yahaya not only founded the mosque but also entrusted an eight-acre plot. This land now forms the heart of Kampung Dodol home to over 100 houses.
Masjid Jamek Hashim Yahya wasn’t always as it looks today. The original structure was rebuilt in 1979. Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah the then Malaysian Finance Minister officially opened the renovated mosque in 1981. This wasn’t the first renovation. The mosque has been upgraded multiple times. It maintains its original design despite these changes. A testament to its enduring importance in the community.
The mosque serves a large congregation. Ten thousand people call it their place of worship. Their community spans Kampung Dodol Kampung Masjid Taman Nusantara and more. Even modern technology plays a role in the mosque’s function. CCTV cameras installed with the help of the local assemblyman ensure security.
