Whispers of faith echo within the Gereja Bethel Indonesia. This prominent Pentecostal church stands as a testament to the enduring power of belief in Jakarta. Gereja Bethel Indonesia traces its roots back to the arrival of American missionaries in 1921, who sowed the seeds of Pentecostalism in Indonesian soil. The church’s journey, however, wasn’t without its trials. It emerged from a series of splits and reunifications. Originally part of the Pentecostal Church of Indonesia, a group broke away in 1946 to establish the Bethel Full Gospel Church. A brief union with the Church of God in Cleveland, Tennessee occurred in 1967. Yet disagreements led to another reorganization in 1970. The Gereja Bethel Indonesia, as we know it today, was officially registered in 1972. By 1998, the Gereja Bethel Indonesia had grown to encompass 1,320 churches and 725,000 believers. This expansion continued. By 2012, the church boasted 5,000 churches, a community of 3 million members in Indonesia, and an additional 100,000 members abroad. Gereja Bethel Indonesia’s creed centers around core Pentecostal beliefs. The Bible is considered divinely inspired. The Trinity and the dual nature of Christ are central tenets. Baptism and communion are observed as sacred ordinances. The church places special emphasis on baptism with the Holy Spirit and divine healing, seen as manifestations of Christ’s resurrection power. The Gereja Bethel Indonesia also inaugurated a 10,000-seat temple in Jakarta in 2003, a testament to its growing influence.
