What if I told you this place, Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School, was born from a fight for equality? Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School stands as a testament to the power of activism. It arose from a 1984 consent decree between the City of San Francisco and the NAACP. This legal agreement paved the way for a new high school. It was initially established in the Silver Terrace neighborhood. But it later found its home here, at 400 Mansell Avenue in Visitacion Valley, on the grounds of the former Woodrow Wilson High School. The school carries the names of two influential figures, Phillip and Sala Burton, both former U.S. Representatives. Phillip Burton was a champion of civil rights. He served in the California Assembly and the U.S. House of Representatives. His wife, Sala, continued his legacy of public service. The school honors their commitment to social justice and equality. Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School opened its doors in 1984. It has a rich history. For a brief period, from January 2007 to May 2009, it shared its campus with Leadership High School. Then, from May 2009 to May 2011, Metropolitan Arts and Tech Charter School also called this place home. Today, Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School serves a diverse student body of over 1,000 students. It’s interesting to note that public radio station KALW broadcasts from studios right here on campus. The school also boasts a student wellness center, established in 2005, one of the first in the district. Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School strives to create a nurturing environment. It fosters academic excellence and prepares its students for college and beyond. The school has received accolades for its work, including the National Academy Foundation Most Improved School Award in 2010. The school continues to build on its legacy of equity and achievement, empowering students to become future leaders. It stands as a symbol of progress, born from the struggle for civil rights.
