Salcombe Preparatory School stands before us a co-educational beacon in North London. It educates children aged 3 to 11. Salcombe Prep inspires pupils. They believe in their abilities. They strive for personal excellence. The school helps them thrive in academic creative and personal pursuits.

Founded in 1916, Salcombe Preparatory School has a rich history. The Deakin sisters, Miss Freda and Miss Ethel Deakin, started it in Hornsey. Initially, only eight children attended Salcombe Preparatory School. These were eight “well to do” children.

World War I impacted the school. Zeppelin raids in 1917 made Hornsey unsafe. The Deakin sisters moved the school to their country house. This was Salcombe House in Devon. In 1918, they returned to London. They relocated the school to Avenue Road in Southgate. This was near its current Chase Side location.

Salcombe Preparatory School has two sites today. The Pre-School and Pre-Prep School are located on Green Road. The Prep School for older pupils is on Chase Side. The Green Road site is special. It is Grade II listed with Historic England.

Many notable people attended Salcombe Preparatory School. Karren Brady is one. She is a sporting executive and television broadcaster. Sir Robert Winston is also an alumnus. He is a professor, medical doctor, and television presenter. Maro Itoje, an England international rugby player, went here. Also, Ross and Norris McWhirter. They co-founded the Guinness World Records.

Salcombe Preparatory School has had several head teachers. The Deakin sisters led first. Then Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Lawn. Mr. Anthony Blackhurst followed. After him came Mr. Ari Guha. Mr. Floyd Steadman took over. Then Mr. Berni Curzon. Mrs. Christina Leach then led. Since 2013, Mrs. Sarah-Jane Davies has been the head. Currently the Headmistress is Miss Nicola Sands.
