Whispers of history cling to the Universität Kassel Villa Rühl. Two historic buildings stand proudly on Mönchebergstraße 40 and 42. This is the Universität Kassel Villa Rühl. It’s a Gründerzeit gem near the Holländischer Platz campus. The university owns this magnificent property.

The Villa Rühl wasn’t always a university building. Once a vibrant hub of activity it housed a chemical cleaning business from around 1960 until the mid-1970s. The legacy of this past is not entirely forgotten. Soil beneath the Villa Rühl still bears the lingering effects of volatile halogenated hydrocarbons. These chemicals caused long-term damage to the soil. Extensive and costly cleanup efforts continue to this day.

Originally the site included two buildings. One was a residential villa. The other was a former inn known as “Zum Möncheberg”. This inn was reportedly Kassel’s first club meeting place. Behind the main villa was another structure. This served as the workshop for the Rühl company. Interestingly building number 42 has a unique history. It was dismantled from its original location in the Karlsaue. It was then moved to the Möncheberg around 1870. Adam Schonewald a landlord transformed it into the popular inn. He also added the still-standing banquet hall.

Later the inn’s banquet hall became the “Urania” cinema in 1945. It was later renamed “Scala” in 1953. By the 1960s it closed due to safety concerns. The inn itself lasted until the 1970s. It finally shut down due to the building’s deterioration. The Rühl company eventually took over the property. They used it for storage. The widow Rühl then bequeathed this remarkable property. It became part of the Universität Kassel. This was after a long period of abandonment.

Today the Universität Kassel Villa Rühl is undergoing a major transformation. A significant renovation project is underway. The cost is approximately 6.2 million euros. The plan is to preserve the historic appearance of both villas. They must also adhere to strict preservation regulations. The renovation will create modern facilities. These will include offices meeting rooms conference spaces and a new library. A two-story addition will house a new conference and event hall. The buildings will be fully accessible and environmentally friendly. When complete the Villa Rühl will serve as a home for the INCHER research center. INCHER is an interdisciplinary center. It focuses on higher education and related societal issues. The move will allow INCHER to better host conferences and collaborations. The renovation also boosts INCHER’s international profile and reach. The Universität Kassel Villa Rühl stands as a testament to the past. It also embraces a bright future. It is a place of learning collaboration and progress.
