St. Francis Yacht Club

Established in 1927, the St. Francis Yacht Club emerged from a spirited debate. Members of the older San Francisco Yacht Club disagreed about the clubhouse location after a fire. Some wanted to stay in Marin County. Others preferred San Francisco. This group, seeking easier access to their club, formed the St. Francis Yacht Club. The St. Francis Yacht Club quickly became a prestigious institution. Membership is by invitation only. The renowned San Francisco architect Willis Polk designed the original clubhouse. It stood on landfill from the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition near Crissy Field. Tragically, a fire in 1976 claimed a member’s life and injured seven others. The western half, destroyed in the blaze, was rebuilt. The Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 caused further damage, requiring extensive foundation work. Each time, the St. Francis Yacht Club members rallied to restore their cherished clubhouse. The St. Francis Yacht Club boasts stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. It houses multiple dining venues. These include a formal dining room, the Clippership bar, and the more casual Grill Room. The club also added outdoor dining spaces. The Race Deck sits atop the clubhouse. The Courtyard offers a sheltered spot, protected from the bay’s strong winds. The St. Francis Yacht Club is deeply involved in sailboat racing. They sponsor many regattas, like the Rolex Big Boat Series. This series attracts an impressive array of large yachts. The club also hosts the Kleinman/Swiftsure Regatta, the Elvstrom/Zellerbach regatta, and the Jessica Cup for classic yachts. The Opti Heavy Weather regatta is a beloved annual event. Young sailors test their mettle in challenging conditions right in front of the St. Francis Yacht Club. The club has even hosted numerous World, Continental, and National Championships. In 2000, the St. Francis Yacht Club backed the AmericaOne syndicate for the Louis Vuitton Cup. Unfortunately, they were defeated in the semifinals. Beyond San Francisco, the St. Francis Yacht Club maintains an outstation on Tinsley Island. This Delta haven, purchased in 1958, provides members a peaceful retreat. They can enjoy cruises, events, sailing classes, and the tranquility of island life. Tinsley Island even has a lighthouse from the late 1800s, offering unique accommodations. The St. Francis Yacht Club’s history is intertwined with legendary figures in sailing, like Tom Blackaller and Paul Cayard, both Sailing Hall of Fame members. The St. Francis Yacht Club’s legacy continues. It remains a hub for sailing excellence and camaraderie on San Francisco Bay.
