What if I told you that the school we’re standing before, Rizal High School, once held a world record? Rizal High School, established in 1902 as Pasig Secondary School, earned the title of “most populated secondary school in the world” by the Guinness Book of World Records. It held that title from 1993 until 2005. Imagine the bustling hallways filled with nearly 20,000 students! Rizal High School, named after the Philippine national hero José Rizal, boasts a rich history. Its humble beginnings started with only 28 students. Originally, the Provincial Board opposed its establishment in Pasig due to its proximity to Manila. They preferred students enroll in Manila schools. However, American financial support, with the condition that students from surrounding towns would attend the Pasig school, helped it thrive. The school’s first home was a rented room, later replaced by a vacated military post. In 1914, a new building was constructed and the school’s name officially changed to Rizal High School. In 1918, the first class of 27 students graduated. Among its notable alumni are former Senate presidents Neptali Gonzales and Jovito Salonga, former Senator Rene Saguisag, Maestro Lucio San Pedro, and National Artist Carlos “Botong” Francisco. Even two heritage acacia trees, fondly called “Batibot,” grace the grounds, believed to have been planted before the school’s inception. These trees stand as silent witnesses to generations of students passing through Rizal High School’s halls. From a small rented room to a world-record holding institution, Rizal High School’s journey is a testament to the power of education and community.
