Imagine Parisian elegance embracing the soul of Russia. That’s the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Here, on Rue Daru, stands a testament to faith and Franco-Russian connection.

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is not just a church. It is the first permanent Russian Orthodox place of worship in Paris. Consecrated in 1861, it became a spiritual home for the growing Russian community. Father Joseph Vassiliev, a chaplain, initiated its construction. Emperor Napoleon III granted permission. Czar Alexander II contributed significantly to the costs. He donated 200,000 French francs.

The cathedral’s architecture blends Byzantine and Muscovite styles. Joseph Valliliev, a Russian diplomat, described it as such. You’ll notice the Greek cross shape. Five bell towers rise, topped with gilded, bulblike domes. These domes symbolize flames of candles carrying prayers. The central tower features a Russian Orthodox cross. It has three traverses representing Christ and the evangelists.

Step inside the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. The interior draws inspiration from Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia. Paintings, gilding, and polychrome decoration tell the church’s history. The iconostasis is a striking barrier. It separates the clergy’s space from the nave. The Royal Portal is in the center. It features icons of the Annunciation and the Evangelists. Evgraf Sorokine painted them. Icons of Christ, Alexander Nevsky, and Archangel Michael adorn the lower level. The upper level showcases the Holy Trinity by Pauel Sorokine.

Murals by D. Sorokine and Feodor Bronnikov depict key Christian events. Look for scenes like the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Last Supper. Bogolubov’s murals include “Christ Walking on the Waters.”

Beneath the main church lies the Crypt. It is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Consecrated in 1863, it became a unique parish. Services are held in French and Slavic. By 1964, it was officially designated as the place of worship for the French-Russian Orthodox community.

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral has seen many notable figures pass through its doors. Pablo Picasso married Olga Khokhlova here in 1918. Jean Cocteau, Max Jacob, and Guillaume Apollinaire witnessed the event. Funerals for Ivan Turgenev, Fyodor Chaliapin, and Wassily Kandinsky were held here. Even France’s current prime minister, Gabriel Attal, attended services here as a child.

Interestingly, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral maintains its independence. A new Russian Orthodox cathedral opened in Paris in 2016. The Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral is under Moscow’s authority. The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral remains independent.

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral stands as a beacon. It is a symbol of faith, art, and the enduring bond between Russia and France. Its golden domes and rich interior offer a glimpse into a vibrant cultural history.
