Hear that roar? It echoes through the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. It’s a testament to the Estadio GNP Seguros’ enduring legacy.
Originally known as Foro Sol the Estadio GNP Seguros started as a temporary solution in 1993. Big music concerts needed a venue. Four temporary stadium seatings were placed in the banked curve of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
Paul McCartney’s manager sought a venue for the New World Tour. Estadio Azteca was unavailable. An agreement with Alejandro Soberón led to the temporary field. In 1997 the venue became permanent. It was then named Foro Sol after a popular beer brand.
The Estadio GNP Seguros has a rich history. It was built for large music concerts. From 2000 to 2014 it was also a baseball stadium. The Diablos Rojos del México and Tigres de México called it home. The stadium is the second-largest concert venue in Mexico City. Only Estadio Azteca is bigger.
In 2015 the Mexican Grand Prix returned. The Estadio GNP Seguros became part of the track. The final sector runs through it adding 25000 to the circuit capacity. Since 2016 the Mexico City ePrix has also raced here.
Big changes happened in 2024. The stadium closed for renovations. The Foro Sol became the Estadio GNP Seguros. This followed a new deal with GNP Seguros.
Let’s talk about baseball. On June 2 2000 the Estadio GNP Seguros opened as a baseball park. Tigres de México played Diablos Rojos del México. Tigres won back-to-back Mexican League championships. They then moved to Puebla City. The Diablos Rojos became the sole tenants. “Infierno Solar” or Solar Hell was its nickname.
Three Major League Baseball exhibition games were hosted here. The Pittsburgh Pirates played the Tampa Bay Rays in 2001. The New York Mets faced the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2003. The Florida Marlins met the Houston Astros in 2004. The Estadio GNP Seguros also hosted Pool B of the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
What about music? Madonna first performed here in 1993. Coldplay performed four shows in April 2022. These shows set records. They had the biggest attendance for an English-speaking act. Daddy Yankee performed five shows in 2022. He had the biggest attendance at the venue. Taylor Swift scheduled four shows in 2023. She was the first female artist to do so.
The Estadio GNP Seguros is home to Vive Latino. This annual rock music festival is very popular. It features Mexican Latin and Spanish groups.
