The Dirección General de Cómputo y de Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación or DGTIC as it’s known is a vital part of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México UNAM. Founded in 1981 its roots stretch back much further to the UNAM’s acquisition of its first computer in 1958. That IBM 650 a giant leap for Mexican computing. It marked the beginning of a need for specialized knowledge and expertise. This need eventually led to the creation of the DGTIC.
Initially known as the Programa Universitario de Cómputo PUC it evolved. It became the Dirección General de Servicios de Cómputo Académico DGSCA in 1985. Finally in 2010 it was renamed Dirección General de Cómputo y de Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación reflecting the expanding role of digital technologies.
The Dirección General de Cómputo y de Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación manages Mexico’s largest academic telecommunications network RedUNAM. It connects over 80000 computers. It also provides internet access to thousands of students via the Wireless University Network RIU. The DGTIC’s responsibilities are vast. They coordinate the University Learning Network RUA and the entire UNAM Online initiative. They provide extensive training in ICT for students and the public. They also operate the UNAM Network Information Center NIC and Network Operation Centers NOCs. They even manage UNAM’s high-performance computing resources including the powerful Miztli supercomputer.
Beyond its core functions the DGTIC also operates the Ixtli Observatory a leading immersive visualization center in Latin America. They oversee information security. They manage UNAM’s telephone and video conferencing networks. They work on countless collaborations and projects. The DGTIC’s impact extends far beyond this building. It touches nearly every aspect of UNAM’s operations. It shapes how technology is used across the university and beyond.
