Why was a crescent-shaped marvel hidden in Vangede? Let’s unravel the mystery of Vangede Batteri. Vangede Batteri wasn’t always a peaceful park. This seemingly tranquil space was once a bristling hub of military might. Constructed in 1888, Vangede Batteri formed a crucial part of Copenhagen’s defensive ring. Imagine cannons booming and soldiers bustling about. Vangede Batteri, nestled between Lyngby Fort and Garderhøj Fort, stood ready to defend the city’s northern approaches. This crescent-shaped fort, stretching 350 meters, boasted a dry moat, a barracks, and a munitions magazine. It housed two machine guns and nine 12 cm cannons, a formidable arsenal for the time. The battery was manned by a dedicated crew. Three officers led thirteen non-commissioned officers and one hundred privates. These men lived and worked within the fort, ready to defend their city at a moment’s notice. Vangede Batteri played its role until 1920, when it was decommissioned along with the rest of Copenhagen’s fortifications. The casemate found a new purpose, housing a tin recycling plant. Today, Vangede Batteri has embraced a more peaceful existence. The northern and central sections have been transformed into a public park. The southern part now houses single-family homes. The old casemate has been reimagined as a playground, echoing with children’s laughter instead of the roar of cannons. Visit Vangede Batteri today and stroll along the well-preserved northern battery line. Imagine the echoes of history beneath your feet. This quiet park holds a wealth of stories, a testament to Copenhagen’s rich military past.
