Whispers of history echo within Masjid Al Mukaromah. This isn’t just any mosque. It’s a living testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of a community. Located in Kampung Bandan Jakarta Utara Masjid Al Mukaromah stands as one of Jakarta’s oldest mosques.

Imagine its humble beginnings in 1879. It started as a small prayer hall a musholla nestled near the graves of two revered Islamic scholars. These scholars had dedicated their lives to spreading Islam even during the harsh Dutch colonial era. They even clashed with the VOC around 1682.

Sayid Abdul Rachman bin Alwi As-Syafitri a merchant and devout Muslim founded this tiny musholla. He followed the guidance of Habib Abdullah bin Muhsin Al-Attas who had urged him to build a place of worship near these significant graves. Habib Abdullah believed the graves belonged to Waliyullah holy men who had preached in Kampung Bandan.

The musholla became a center for religious instruction and community life. After Sayid Abdul Rachman’s passing in 1908 his son Sayid Alwi continued his father’s work expanding the musholla into a full-fledged mosque. This transformation took place between 1913 and 1917.

Masjid Al Mukaromah’s footprint is impressive. The main building covers 15 by 13 meters. Separate entrances cater to men and women. The graves of those early scholars are still housed within the mosque a constant reminder of its sacred origins.

The mosque sits on a large plot of land 95 by 50 meters. A high brick wall encloses the complex. A grand gate marks the southern entrance. Its architectural style reflects its history undergoing several renovations. In 1956 additional rooms were added. Then in 1972 the DKI Jakarta Museum and History Department undertook renovations. A major restoration in 1978 replaced many parts yet maintained the mosque’s original architectural character.

The mosque sees a surge in visitors during special occasions like Maulud and Sya’ban. Pilgrims from all over Indonesia even beyond Java come to pay their respects. It’s a place where the past and present intertwine. A place of profound spiritual significance. A place that continues to inspire faith and community. A place that is Masjid Al Mukaromah.
