Gaspard Jangot, a name whispered on Rue Jangot, echoes a legacy of quiet generosity. This street, tucked in La Guillotière, stretches from Rue de Marseille to Rue Sébastien Gryphe. Rue Jangot is a short street. It’s lined with modest 19th-century buildings, three to five stories high. Simple, yet elegant, they boast wrought-iron window supports and decorative lambrequins. Number 13 showcases the most elaborate ironwork. Scattered among these charming buildings are lower workshops, some quite extensive. A 1960s residence, eight stories tall, stands in stark contrast with its simple white facade and two trees. At the intersection of Rue Mazagran, demolitions have created space for parking and a sports field. An eight-story pink building stands unconventionally across the street. But back to Gaspard Jangot. He was a local resident and benefactor of Lyon’s Hospices Civils. Born in Breuil, he died on July 11, 1857, at his home at 5 Place du Gouvernement, aged 77. His son, Claude or Claudius Jangot, later became a known physician. In 1845, a member of the Jangot family donated land for the construction of Saint André Church. Rue Jangot itself developed in the mid-19th century, over a site previously occupied by industrial activities. The building at number 13, constructed starting in 1854, is quite interesting. Known as the “Château des Décombres” or “du Prado”, it incorporates elements from demolished buildings across Lyon. Number 10, positioned unusually between Rue Cluzan and Rue Mazagran, bears the architectural style of the 1950s. This placement echoes a similar orientation seen in the Citroën garage on Rue de Marseille, a vestige of a plan to extend Avenue Félix Faure to the quay.
