Consider St Peter’s London Docks a beacon of hope. It rose amidst the poverty of Wapping. This Grade I listed Anglican church stands as a testament to faith and resilience.

St Peter’s story began in 1856. The Revd Charles Lowder and a group of priests started a mission. They belonged to the Society of the Holy Cross. This society united priests for service.

Wapping was a challenging place then. Prostitutes, petty criminals, and dockworkers lived side by side. Lowder’s mission first operated in Lower Well Alley. Later, it moved to an iron church in Calvert Street. The clergy and sisters offered practical and spiritual aid. They ran schools, clubs, and cheap canteens. Child care was also provided. Services centered on Mass were held at the Mission Churches.

In 1866, the new Church of St Peter was consecrated. Soon after, cholera ravaged the East End. Lowder organized care for the sick. Sisters of Mercy and others joined him. They raised funds for a tented hospital. Priests and sisters risked their lives. They worked tirelessly for the people of Wapping. People called Lowder “the Father”. He seemed like the father of the whole community.

After Lowder’s death in 1880, extensions were designed by Maurice Bingham Adams. A mortuary, chapel, and baptistry were added between 1884 and 1894.

Further work occurred in the 1930s. It finished in 1940. But a bomb destroyed it during the Blitz. Repairs finished in 1949. A complete renovation took place in 1985.

Today, St Peter’s London Docks continues its mission. Sunday Mass is held at 9.15am and 10.30am. St Peter’s, London Docks Church of England Primary School attends on Thursdays. The school was founded in 1856. It was part of the original mission.

The walls of St Peter’s echo with stories. They speak of devotion and sacrifice. They tell of a community’s unwavering spirit. Stand here and remember Charles Lowder. Remember the priests and sisters. Remember their selfless service. St Peter’s London Docks stands as a symbol. It is a symbol of hope born from hardship. It is a testament to the power of faith. It is the strength of community.
