A humble attap house. That’s where it all began for Bedok Methodist Church. Fifteen members of Geylang Straits Chinese Methodist Church gathered there in 1946. Rev Chew Hock Hin led their first service. This unassuming structure marked the birth of a vibrant community.
Bedok Methodist Church wasn’t always the grand building you see before you. Its humble beginnings in Padang Terbakar highlight a testament to faith. The congregation quickly outgrew the small attap house. In 1952 a new church building was envisioned. Rev Chew laid the cornerstone. Bishop R L Archer dedicated the completed building the following year.
The church continued to grow. Its location near Bedok Road proved strategic. The area developed rapidly. Kampungs gave way to housing estates. The church became a beacon of hope for hundreds of thousands. It welcomed workers families and expatriates. This growth meant the original sanctuary needed replacing. In 1997 it was demolished. The current sanctuary stands as a symbol of this enduring faith.
Today Bedok Methodist Church thrives. Approximately 1200 worshippers call it home. It supports missionaries globally. These dedicated individuals spread the gospel in Cambodia the Philippines and beyond. Short-term mission teams also carry out God’s work. They serve marginalized communities through social action and the sharing of faith.
The church’s mission hasn’t changed. It continues to make disciples. It fosters a close-knit community. People of all ages participate in worship prayer and service. This commitment reflects the founding members’ original vision. Bedok Methodist Church is more than just a place of worship. It is a living testament to faith perseverance and the power of community. Its history is a story of growth adaptation and unwavering devotion.
