“Unearthed in London’s Southwark neighborhood, The Mausoleum whispers tales of a bygone era.” This rare find offers a glimpse into Roman London. It stood as a thriving metropolis. Known as Londinium, it emerged around 43 CE with the arrival of Roman troops.

The Mausoleum’s rediscovery is a testament to our past. Imagine wealthy Roman Londoners paying their respects here. This site was likely a burial ground for them. Although, strangely, coffins have not been uncovered yet.

The Museum of London Archaeology, MOLA, led the dig. They worked on behalf of Landsec and Transport for London, TfL. This excavation revealed the Mausoleum. The building boasts a mosaic floor. Raised platforms are also visible. Walls and stairs lead to another mosaic. It seems the ancients built a second floor above the original mosaic.

Over 100 coins were found. Pottery shards and roofing tiles came to light. Metal fragments also surfaced. The Liberty of Southwark is planned as a commercial complex. But plans exist to preserve the site. The public will get to see this cool piece of the city’s history.

Antonietta Lerz, a senior archaeologist at MOLA, shared her insights. She described the site as a microcosm. It shows the changing fortunes of Roman London. The area expanded with lavish buildings in its early phase. Later, the settlement shrunk. It became a quieter space for remembering the dead.

The unique site features a mosaic floor. This was likely part of a larger burial complex. Consider the artistry and dedication required. It offers us a link to the lives of people from centuries ago.
