Gibet seigneurial. Even the name evokes a chilling sense of dread. Here, on this very spot, stood not just a gallows, but a spectacle of royal power and gruesome justice. The Gibet de Montfaucon, a towering stone structure, dominated the Parisian landscape for centuries. Imagine a massive rectangular base, supporting sixteen imposing stone pillars. These pillars, connected by wooden beams, formed a macabre grid against the sky. From these beams hung not one or two, but sometimes fifty or even sixty bodies, left to rot in the elements as a warning to all who would defy the king. Gibet seigneurial was more than a place of execution; it was a stage for a terrifying play of power. The condemned, sometimes alive, but often already dead, were brought here from all over Paris. They arrived by cart or dragged on a “claie d’infamie,” a wooden hurdle. They were dressed in their everyday clothes, hands bound. Even those beheaded elsewhere were brought to Gibet seigneurial to be hung, either in a sack or by their armpits. Gibet seigneurial stood as a stark symbol of royal authority from at least the 11th century until the reign of Louis XIII. Its construction evolved over time, beginning as simple wooden gallows. During the reign of Philip IV, known as Philip the Fair, it was transformed into the imposing stone edifice we imagine today. Its sixteen pillars came to represent the sixteen districts of Paris, a grim reminder of the reach of royal justice. The bodies hung here until they decomposed, exposed to the wind, rain, and crows. Below, a vast charnel pit awaited their remains, creating a stench that could be smelled for miles. This wasn’t just an execution site; it was a calculated display of power, meant to instill fear and obedience in the populace. Even suicides and those condemned in absentia were represented here, their effigies hung alongside the real dead. The very ground beneath our feet was once soaked with the residue of decay and despair. The Gibet seigneurial witnessed the executions of high-ranking officials, criminals, and even animals that had killed humans. It was a place where justice, or what passed for justice, was dispensed with brutal efficiency. The Gibet seigneurial was finally demolished in 1760, a relic of a more brutal era. Yet, its shadow lingers in the Parisian imagination, a reminder of the dark side of royal power.
