Journey with me back to 1992. Picture a small gathering, just 200 adults and 100 children. This humble beginning marked the birth of Kingsway International Christian Centre, or KICC, right here in London. Kingsway Church quickly blossomed, growing into a vibrant community of thousands. Originally nestled in Hackney, close to the future site of the 2012 Olympic Village, KICC thrived for nine years. The church, with its predominantly West African membership and diverse congregation hailing from 46 nations, pulsated with life. But the Olympics brought change. KICC had to relocate to make way for the 2012 developments. The church found a temporary home on Hoe Street in Walthamstow. They awaited planning permission for a new site in Rainham. However, the government hesitated to grant approval. Ultimately, Kingsway Church secured its current home, Prayer City, in Chatham, Kent. The Walthamstow location still remains a part of the KICC community. Kingsway Church’s journey hasn’t been without its trials. The King’s Ministries Trust, the charity behind KICC, faced two investigations by the Charity Commission. The first investigation revealed serious misconduct and mismanagement. Senior Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo’s dual role as trustee and paid employee, along with questionable financial practices, came under scrutiny. The second investigation delved into the use of funds received from the London Development Agency for the compulsory purchase of the Hackney property. Despite these challenges, KICC continues to serve its community, a testament to its resilience and faith.
