The story of Greater Mount Sinai Baptist Church began in 1925. Rev. H.W. Watkins served as pastor from 1925 to 1931. He laid the pastoral foundation for the church’s future. Rev. Granderson Tilford followed from 1931 to 1945.
In the early years, the church moved several times. It first held services at 1726 West Lake Street in 1928 and 1929. Then it moved to 1850 West Lake Street in 1930 and 1931. In 1932, the church relocated to 1703-09 West Lake Street for five years. By 1937, it had moved again to 1742 West Fulton Street.
Rev. J.V. Richardson led the congregation from 1946 to 1972. He saw the need for a more suitable place of worship. Inspired by God, Rev. Richardson found the current location at 2841 W. Washington Blvd. The purchase price was $35,000. A $15,000 down payment was made. The church marched into its new home on Sunday, June 29, 1947.
Following Rev. Richardson’s dedicated service, Rev. L.H. Davidson briefly pastored in 1972 and 1973. Rev. W.J. Randall then took the reins from 1973 to 1978. Since 1979, Rev. Dr. William R. Lott, Sr. has been the guiding force.
Greater Mount Sinai Baptist Church is also known as “The Mountain Church with The Upper Room Experience”. The church extends a warm invitation. It welcomes everyone to share in its worship services. The mission is clear. It seeks to win the lost for Jesus Christ. It equips them to edify the Body of Christ. It evangelizes the sinner. It exalts the Savior.
