Beyond the shores of Shikanoshima Island lies a shrine. It’s a place where ancient whispers meet the vast ocean. This is Shikaumi Shrine, a sanctuary steeped in history and legend. It stands as a testament to the enduring connection between humanity and the sea.

Shikaumi Shrine is no ordinary place. It’s known as the head shrine of the sea gods. For centuries, it has watched over Hakata Bay. This strategic point was vital for maritime traffic. The shrine’s deity, Watatsumi Sanshin, protects all parts of the sea. He watches over the bottom, middle and surface. People believe he ensures maritime safety. He blesses tides and marine life. He can purify the sea. They say he even controls life and death through water and tides.

The Azumi people once inhabited Kyushu. They revered the sea deity Watatsumi. Shikaumi Shrine is considered Watatsumi’s ancestral shrine. It also honors Azumi-no-isora. The shrine’s primary figures include Nakatsu Watatsumi no Kami on the left and Sokotsu Watatsumi no Kami in the middle. Uwatsu Watatsumi no Kami stands on the right.

Empress Jingu is also worshiped here. She had a close relationship with the myth of the invasion of the Three Han. Legend says Empress Jingu prayed to Azumi no Isoramaru for a safe return from Korea. Gods then appeared from the sea on golden turtles. These turtles guided her route. Later, the turtles turned to stone and washed ashore. They were then dedicated to the gods at Shikaumi Shrine.

Deer hold a special place here. The deer motif appears in rituals and designs. These animals are significant to the Azumi people and their beliefs. The shrine incorporates over 10000 deer antlers. The antlers are located in the Deer Antler Repository.

The shrine’s biennial gojinkosai ceremony is special. The Fukuoka Prefecture recognizes it as an intangible cultural property. Shikaumi Shrine has five auxiliary shrines. These include Okitsumiya and Nakatsumiya. Imamiya Shrine is within the precinct.

When visiting Shikaumi Shrine, purify yourself. Use the purifying sand called “oshioi”. Lightly shake it to the left, right, and left of your body. This prepares you to approach the sacred grounds.

Shikaumi Shrine preserves ancient folklore and festivals. This makes it a must-visit destination. The chirping birds and the faint sound of waves create a relaxing atmosphere. You will feel refreshed as you stroll along. Take home a lucky charm from the Juyojo booth.
Shikaumi Shrine stands as a beacon of faith. It embodies a deep respect for the ocean. It connects us to the past. It reminds us of the enduring power of belief.
