Ever wondered how Bavaria stays connected to Europe’s chemical heartland? The Ethylen-Pipeline Süd is the answer. This pipeline stretches 370 kilometers. It links Münchsmünster in Bavaria to Ludwigshafen. That’s right here in Karlsruhe, where it crosses the Rhine.

The Ethylen-Pipeline Süd wasn’t built overnight. Planning began in 2005. The goal was to connect Bavarian ethylene producers with Northwest Europe’s ethylene network. Think of it as a vital artery for the chemical industry. The pipeline has a diameter of 25 cm. It’s designed for safety. Shut-off valves are placed every 12 to 18 kilometers. These can be remotely controlled to isolate sections if needed. Evonik Industries AG in Marl monitors the pipeline around the clock. Regular helicopter and ground patrols keep a close watch.

Why ethylene? It’s a key ingredient in plastics. Polyethylene, polystyrene, and PVC all rely on it. Transporting ethylene efficiently means using pipelines. LyondellBasell and OMV in Burghausen produce around 650.000 tons of ethylene annually. Clariant, Vinnolit, Borealis, and Wacker Chemie use it. LyondellBasell also uses it in Münchsmünster.

Building the Ethylen-Pipeline Süd wasn’t cheap. It cost around 200 million euros. The State of Bavaria contributed 45 million euros. This funding required negotiations with the EU. The EU initially resisted but later agreed. However, they capped the amount. The pipeline follows existing routes like the Transalpine Oil Pipeline. Originally, it was slated for completion in 2008. Legal disputes with landowners delayed construction. Laying the pipes finished in early 2012. Operations finally started on July 19, 2013 after a year-long trial.

The Ethylen-Pipeline Süd faced legal challenges. Both Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg passed laws to support its construction. These laws allowed for land expropriation if necessary. Some communities protested. Citizens in Alfdorf, Mutlangen, and Iggingen opposed the project. They worried about its impact on their land. Courts ultimately upheld the pipeline’s legality. They recognized its importance to the public good.

The Ethylen-Pipeline Süd secures ethylene supply. It adds flexibility to the chemical industry. Without it, a plant shutdown could halt the entire network. The pipeline connects Bavaria to major chemical centers. These centers are in Ludwigshafen, Cologne, Gelsenkirchen, Antwerp, and Rotterdam. This connection boosts operational security and flexibility.

So, next time you see a plastic product remember the Ethylen-Pipeline Süd. It’s a hidden but essential part of modern industry. It silently ensures the smooth flow of vital materials. It is connecting Bavaria to the rest of Europe.
