Curious to know why this green space exists? This is Lerner Park. It offers a peek into Chicago’s past. It reveals a story of industry, community, and transformation.

Lerner Park is located in the West Ridge neighborhood. It spans 8.49 acres. The park is two blocks west of California Avenue. It is also five blocks south of Touhy Avenue. You will find a large open green space here. There are also two tennis courts. A playground with a sandbox completes the picture.

But Lerner Park wasn’t always a park. Time to travel back to the early 20th century. This area was once a hub of brick-making. The area’s clay and sand deposits attracted brick-makers. They set up shop here. Workers followed. Bungalows sprang up around the factories.

By mid-century, the brick industry declined. However, the population boomed. The community needed recreational space. In 1962, the Chicago Park District stepped in. It bought this former clay pit from the Illinois Brick Company.

The Park District transformed the site in 1964 and 1965. Initially, the Park District and the Chicago Board of Education partnered. They jointly operated the new park. They also managed the adjacent Stephen Decatur Elementary School. This project was unfortunately short-lived.

In 1966, the park received its name. It was named for Leo Lerner. Leo Lerner was an important author and publisher. He was also a public-spirited citizen. Lerner published the Lerner Neighborhood Newspapers. He also served as Chairman of the Board of Roosevelt University. Additionally, he was a member of the State Pardon and Parole Board.

Today, Lerner Park provides a space for relaxation and recreation. While there is no structured programming here, you can visit nearby Chippewa Park. There you can find more activities.

Lerner Park also offers pickleball. There are four courts available. These courts are a combination of pickleball and tennis courts. So, grab your racket or paddle. Enjoy a game in this historic space.

As you wander through Lerner Park, remember its story. It began as a clay pit. It became a vital part of the West Ridge community. The park embodies the spirit of Chicago. It reflects its industrial past and its commitment to recreation.
